Lasercut tabbed box

por Neon22

Creates a tabbed box with kerf setting for tight fits. Or dimples for press fits.

- set dimensions in various units,
- width, depth, height, material thickness,
- choose number of tabs for each dimension,
- include corners or not,
- kerf adjustable - if tight fit required, or
- can use dimples for pressure fits for wood etc (rounds or triangles), or
- can set zero kerf and use minimal material to create.

In all cases - uses minimal lines to optimise for laser cutting.

You will find it under the Render menu in Extensions.
[Edit: fixed for Inkscape 1.0]

I can't seem to get this one to work.

The zip file includes to files but the inx file is called Lasercut-jigsaw.inx

The Lasercut-jigsaw extension does work well by the way.

Maren Hachmann escreveu :

Erik, could you report that over at github, in the 'Issues' section? https://github.com/Neon22/inkscape-LasercutBox/issues

loic.carrera@insas.be escreveu :

Hello !

I followed the instruction to instal the plugin but it doesn't appear on the extensions list.

Is it up to date for MacOs Sierra ?

Neon22 escreveu :

Oops - sorry this has been broken for a while :(
correct zip is now there. with matching py and inx files.
Tested in 0.92 - should work.

Will appear on Extensions/Render menu as "lasercut box"

I don't know if this extension is supposed to work like this, but I just downloaded it, and the two boxes I've tried to make weren't like the ones on the image, they had some tabs inside.

Don't know if I'm setting something up or just not seen some option.

I can not get this exaction to appear in the extensions list. I followed the direction at the same time I added the Knob Scale extension. The Know Scale appears and works, but not this one. (I have inkscape 0.92.3)

Ken Wren escreveu :

Never mind, I just found it under Extensions->Render->Laser Box.

Neon22 escreveu :

Yes its confusing to find many of these extensions - we should really indicate where they can be found in a description field.

Palladius escreveu :

Installed this and it works beautifully. I had to tune it a little for my Glowforge - Basic but once the kerf was dialed in I get a nice tight fit. Thank you for making this extension!

If anyone is using a Glowforge Basic, a kerf of 0.15 mm is very close.

@jkllew Are you using inkscape 92.X or 0.48 ?

Hello,
Thank you for providing this extension for Inkscape users!

This is just to let you know that most 3rd party Inkscape extensions, like this one, probably will not work with the upcoming new Inkscape version, the long-awaited version 1.0.

Here is the info you need to update this extension, so that it will work with 1.0 and future versions.

If you have further questions, you can contact Inkscape developers via mailing lists (https://lists.inkscape.org/postorius/lists/?all-lists), forum (https://inkscape.org/forums/extensions/), or the chatroom (https://chat.inkscape.org/channel/team_devel)

If you have already updated it, please disregard this message.

All best,

Hey @neon22 do you have any plans to upgrade this Extension for Inkscape 1.0?

Fingers crossed as this is my first visit to inkscape, my OS won't work with any of the previous versions and it will be a wile before i have the skills to code this myself.

Neon22 escreveu :

I'm working on about 10 of these at the moment trying to upgrade them. Expect results in a few days.

Is there a version of this that works with Inkscape 1.

Ignore that. I just read the one above.

I just tested, and it created the box with the wrong dimensions.

I set "internal dimensions" option, and then set the height to 240mm. But the generated box had the EXTERNAL height of 240mm, not internal.

Neon22 escreveu :

@johnflux I have just tested it also. I created two boxes. One with "external" set and once again with "internal" set.
Both came out correct. I used mm also. I can measure and see the difference visually.

I cannot explain how its not working for you. Sorry.

Voogla escreveu :

Had a similar problem. Creating a new document and using the extension to make box worked fine. However, when trying the same in some older documents (pre-1.0), the box-dimensions were too large. Interestingly, when I copied the box from the new document int the old it kept its correct dimensions. After a long search I figured out that most of my pre-1.0 documents had in the 'docuement properties' a different scale set. While the new documents start with 1.0 user units per mm, most of my old documents were set to 0.93750 user units per mm (for whatever reason) when opened in the new Inkscape on a Mac. In the end I did not adjust my old documents (as this would screw up the dimensions of my old drawings), but kept creating boxes in a new document and copied them into the old one...

Neon22 escreveu :

@voogla copying between will work because units come across in svg.

However older (0.48) boxes will have been at 90dpi instead of the 96dpi on 0.92. Finally in 1.0 units have been sorted out (apparently). I think there was some mac lossage and maybe 0.91 never got made for the Mac but I don't know for sure.

Sorry for your trouble. Glad its working now.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I was in the process of designing tabbed boxes for the installation of music box mechanisms. Then I founs your extension! WOW, it is exactly what I was looking for. Again, thank you for sharing.

meganoth escreveu :

A small suggestion: I have access to a lasercutter where you can use the cutter-software to add the kerf.
I often use a box as basis for my designs but then do extensive edits. So having the kerf included from the start is detrimental as I always have to calculate with it whenever adjusting anything.

Now I can set kerf 0 with your extension, but then it saves cuts by concatenating the parts, which actually is a great idea to save lasertime, but is simply not usable if I want to use the cutter-software later to add a kerf.

It would be great if your extension had a method to set kerf 0 but not concatenate the parts.

Anyway, thank you for this extension.
