Make Page Tileable

من طرف Scott Pakin

Make Page Tileable clones all objects that straddle an edge of the page to make the page as a whole tileable. This can be useful for making background patterns for webpages, textures for games and raytraced scenes, tiling patterns for autostereograms, and other places where seamless repetition is desired.

To run the extension, simply select Extensions → Page → Make Page Tileable. If no objects are selected then all objects on the page will be cloned. Otherwise, only the selected objects will be cloned. Each set of clones is placed in a group so their positions can be adjusted in unison.

Is there a difference to the 'Seamless Pattern' extension and template?

To be honest, I was unaware of Seamless Pattern. Before writing my extension I searched the built-in extensions and the extensions gallery here for something similar. I also searched the web but with search terms like "tiled" and "tiling" and "tileable"; I didn't think of "seamless". It didn't occur to me to look for an Inkscape template rather than an extension.

That said, I suppose the difference is one of user-interface preference. Try both, and see which you like more.

It's in the last place I for one ever would have thought to look: FileNew From Template…Seamless Pattern…

Thank you Scott!

I've started using Seamless Pattern myself for a few things. However, I did find one use case in which Make Page Tileable feels more natural, at least to me: creating chain-linked blobs. Try drawing something like the following, and see which mechanism you prefer.
