I successfully created a bitmap trace of this image, but I need to refine the fills, add color, define the paths et al. I'm a novice. How can I rebuild this image?
Depends. Do you need lines with variable width for the outline (i.e. exactly as they look in the original) or do you want to have lines that have a constant stroke width and are easily editable?

And what does the result look like? What about it is it that you want different? Would you also do manual tracing?
