A long journey

20 years of Inkscape is not the end of the journey but a huge milestone. The new version is built on the foundations of the previous versions and is becoming better with each iteration. It's a shining example of what is possible in open source software when a great team of dedicated developers gets together and works their magic. I tried to showcase what can be done in Inkscape with simple shapes and without fancy drawing skills. Using only a limited set of tools to create a consistent yet rich look. The piece relies heavily on gradients, tapered and power stroke path effects on simple lines and basic shapes [circles and rectangles were the starting point for most elements]. Organizing a design of this complexity was key. The improved layers and objects panel was a huge help in keeping the 2500+ objects that make this scene under control. I played around a lot with layer blend modes, path effects [taper and powerstroke], blurs, the spiro effects on the pen tool, clones, and Boolean operations. What started as a quick test [while stuck on another idea] grew wild and I went a bit overboard... but it's just too much fun to work in Inkscape. AboutScreen v1.4 entry - Creative Growth - wonderous plants grow when creativity is set free. I love working with colours, simple shapes, and gradients to create the illusion of something rather complex. This design ended up with ~13,000 elements in a single file [for the about screen and the two extra layouts [web and welcome], countless clip groups, dozens of gradients, a LOT of path effects and blurs, and layer blend modes to give nice colour mixes. ...and Inkscape did not disappoint. I do a lot of sketches about the idea of looking back at 20 years of inkscape and finally came up with the idea of time travel. these two characters in my work use a portal to go back in time when the first version of inkscape is about to be released. I wanted to convey the idea that Inkscape has come a long way in the past 20 years, and that we should be proud of what we have achieved. It's difficult to say if the lion just got too excited about the new drums, or was the basic 8-beat too difficult for him to learn. Or maybe he is just angry, that rock music has lost it's edge and feel of danger. Oh, well... I took me about a month to finish this drawing. I'm new to Inkscape and vector drawing, so I needed a project where I could try things out. I decided on a T-shirt design that I could print for myself. The image is 100% made in Inkscape. I just used Gimp to resize and crop the image, but I didn't do any color adjustments or anything like that.

Finally, after several times in which I thought about participating and didn't do it, the time has come, and, winning hours of sleep, here I present my design proposal. As you can see, it's a kind of analogue version of the Inkscape user interface and, in what would be a "page" of the program, I made a design that joins the anniversary of the program and the new "Shape Builder Tool" of this version. Just in case it's not quite "legal", I clarify that, after deciding what I wanted to do (and to help me with perspective, shadows and proportions) I did a first stage of "blocking", modelling the objects of the design in Blender, without materials, and distributing them in a scene. Then I imported the image from Inkscape and used it as a base to make the illustration. The font for the text "SINCE 2003" and the font for my name (which I placed in the lower left corner) is "Miedinger Bold" (downloaded from https://fontlibrary.org/en/font/miedinger#Miedinger*-Bold). The text "20 years" is not a real typeface. It has been very tiring, but very entertaining, the whole process and I'm glad I decided to send a proposal.

A collection of plug-ins primarily intended for designers of bobbin lace patterns. The plug-ins draw various types of printable grids of dots or pair diagrams. For non lace makers: pair diagrams are two-in-two-out digraphs. Some tools have a BSD license, others a GPLv3. An older release of the plugins (for a pre 1.0 version of InkScape) has a 5th plug-in, it complements an interactive online tool. This tool is replaced by GroundForge on https://d-bl.github.io/ The tool generates thread diagrams from pair diagrams. The new tool groups the segments of a line and doesn't need the 5th plugin any more.

The concept is to express the tagline "Draw Freely." as its main focus, in hope it could encourage Inkscape users to draw and create vector works freely. And for the last, I prefer light gray as the background to show "clearness" and "unlimited" space.

I love working with colours, simple shapes, and gradients to create the illusion of something rather complex. This design ended up with ~13,000 elements in a single file [for the about screen and the two extra layouts [web and welcome], countless clip groups, dozens of gradients, a LOT of path effects and blurs, and layer blend modes to give nice colour mixes. ...and Inkscape did not disappoint. Now is posible use Size for the corners New shapes Crossed corners, uses the bounding box of the selected objects for create shapes where the borders crosses himselfs in 3 different ways creating squares, triangles or circles New tab Spikes lets repeat a profile over the perimeter of the selected objects with a size and separation defined by the user. We can choose between five profiles and 3 directions: outside the selection, inside or alternate. Join circles tab creates a path that joins smoothly two circles of different radius. Generate a 3D-printable OpenSCAD cookie cutter file out of an Inkscape document. To use this: 0. Unzip into your Inkscape extensions directory. 1. Convert all objects to paths. 2. Remove all object fill. 3. Make the outer outline be a simple polygon in red. 4. Any inner hollow areas should be bounded by simple polygons in green. 5. Inner lines (which will not go all the way down and hence won't cut the cookie, so they are good for inside detail features) can be black. 6. Some of the buildings have international morse code on them :3 and if you look closely at the darker parts of space, you will se a robot hanging around. Create simple, line-drawing animations for the web from selected paths. When you look at the file that you've applied the extension to using a web browser, it will look as if someone were drawing the paths with an invisible pen. This extension is an InkScape wrapper for https://github.com/jankovicsandras/imagetracerjs. It utilized a standalone node.js executable to run the JavaScript code. It will be fed with embedded or linked images within InkScape. The big difference between this tracer and all other tracers in recent InkScape is the fact that it is capable of splitting an image into it's "isles". The regular tracers separate by colors but not by objects. That makes it hard to work with sometimes. Imagetracer.js will vectorize your beautiful image into a more beautiful SVG trace with separated infills (break apart into single surfaces like a puzzle), that means you get a lot of single areas. works for Linux and Windows

Make sure it is a single object (group it, if necessary). • Draw a straight line that connects two points in that drawing of which you know the distance in real life (for example, if you know how long a wall of your house in the drawing is, draw the line from one end of the wall to the other). • Select the line, then add the drawing to the selection. • Open the extension dialog: Extensions -> Scaling -> RealScale... • Enter the length of the line you just drew, as it is in the real world (for example, if your house wall is 10.5 m long, enter 10.50. • Select the unit you used (for your 10.50 m house, select m; for your 10 cm cardboard box, select cm) • If you intend to print the drawing, and the original object is bigger than the sheet, consider using a scale factor. • To do so, first select if you want to use a metric scale factor (based on mulitples of 5) or an imperial one (based on multiples of 2) or if you would like to enter your own scale factor. • Then, in the corresponding dropdown, or in the number entry field, select or enter the scale you would like to use. Search the extension repository for "Living Hinge Creator for Inkscape 1.0" This extension creates cut lines to make a living hinge when laser cutting material. Extension similar to "color replace" that swaps two user defined colors. The zip file contains versions for Inkscape 0.92, 1.0, 1.1, 1.2 The underlying color extension has a regression in 1.0 and does not work on grouped objects. This has been fixed in later versions. Only tested on Windows but should work on all platforms.

I don't like contests. :) But I do like Inkscape, freedom and free stuff. Art and drawing is all about being free, so what if instead complicated design and overused effects to obtain shiny things,Inkscape would use a simple (and simplist) and honest (even if it's bad, but who decides that) drawing ? Inkscape has great tools for freehand drawing. The new pencil from 1.0 version will sure be very well received. Also, Inkscape doesn't need to sell the software by using some trendy design image. It's a free software and a damn good one! Use an honest image. An image that suggests freedom in creation and freedom as a state of mind. "Draw Freely" is such a good slogan! :) Congrats to all the people here and in the Inkscape family.
