Hi Peter!
As the thumbnail is what users first see (and only then they decide if they will click to see a larger version), it could make sense to put a miniature version of the full image into the thumbnail. I'm just worried people might not understand that it's just an 'excerpt' when they look at it.
...probably true :-)
