@pacer thank you, I actually really like both drawing fish and making underwater environments in Inkscape, this is the first successful fish I have made

This is my entry for the challenge. It is a tribute to a character from a Brazilian TV show from the 1990s. You can see the original opening here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B_vPD9Mo0o
Â
I did not trace it, btw. I made it from scratch using Inkscape and Krita for a quick sketch.Â
I think the lionfish was the obvious choice for me. It was harder than I thought, but I think it was worth the effort. I photographed the original a few years ago in an aquarium in Croatia.
I started by creating the interlocking shapes, converted the positive shapes to negative shapes (bound to a square) and used the Lattice Deformation Live Path Effect to warp the shapes. Following this, I flattened the outcome, converted back to positive shapes, combined the shapes and clipped them to a circle.Â
You can see the outcome of the design from the video in the 2021 Christmas challenge banner:
@pacer Wow, brutal. Inkscape needs a map to sphere or cylinder feature. Thanks. I'll need to work at it more but doable. Now I'll be obsessed with spheres.
I used the calligraphy tool, played with settings (width, thinning, tremor), drew a few messy lines of squiggles. Then, I blurred and stretched everything. (I also used the same calligraphy tool to make the squiggly lines on the fish, different settings though and no blurring).
So many amazing entries, and some newcomers in da mix -welcome aboard!đ My submission: White Spotted Pufferfish - Stained Glass effect Filters > Overlays > Cross Noise (tweaked Fractal Noise) Image that I 've used: https://beyondblue.fandom.com/wiki/White_Spotted_Pufferfish
@pacer (let's see if that's enough to @ people, I'm always unsure): Yeah, I think so! This is one of the illustrations that just came to me. I have so many different thoughts about smartphones, they play such a huge role in my life, are such a heinous way of spying on and (with âsocialâ media) manipulating people but they also have so many positives. Anyway, with this one I kinda liked how the koi inside and above (free and not free?) are kinda a mirror of each other but not really? It's always weird and interesting at the same time to interpret your own works, not sure what this one is about, tbh ^__^
@jobot - I know I'm late in answering, I've been ill for the past week.Â
I broke the image of a seahorse down into three parts; The head, the body and the tail/back fins. With each section, I used mesh gradients to achieve the colours. Then I worked each section with finer elements of shading within each section (Yes, I did draw and shade the individual lines for the fins). I added other elements such as highlights and shadows to achieve dimension to my guy. It's a bit of a long process and I'll admit, takes longer than it should, but that's always been my art style. I've added a picture of the lines and brief layer outline (brief because the numbers of paths and effects are way to long for a simple screen grab. I hope that it helps somewhat to explain the detail and process I go through to create a more realistic (or as real as I can get) result.
We challenge you to:

Cat Fish!
Not quite a fish, but dead Cthulhu who sleeps in R'lyeh and has arisen.
This was a bit of a play around as an homage to H.P. Lovecraft. Thought some might appreciate it.
Â
@hergo007
its a nice graphic but you really need to submit a fish đ :-)Â
Another Anglerfish

Hello all!
Addicted to fish now.
I think the lionfish was the obvious choice for me. It was harder than I thought, but I think it was worth the effort. I photographed the original a few years ago in an aquarium in Croatia.

Your neon signs are interesting @jobot
How did you make them?
@pacer Neon. I'd like to know how you did the perspective on the honey comb pattern on the basketball you uploaded.
Â
I should have added the gaps as well and the anode cathode points.
@jobot
I utilized a technique similar to the method I used in this video.

Here is my submission for this month's challenge. I do enjoy creating images/art/graphics that I would otherwise never work on or design.
It also allows me to understand how Inkscape works and it's work-arounds.
Hippie Fish
Fish Overdose
@jobot now I understand what you're taking. đ
@Gabor now I need tranquilizers to help me make it to the next challenge
First attempt at actually drawing a picture with Inkscape

At the beach.

Fish Blowing Bubbles
aimed at children illustration style đ
@AnnaG What did you use to create the surface of the water effect?
I used the calligraphy tool, played with settings (width, thinning, tremor), drew a few messy lines of squiggles. Then, I blurred and stretched everything. (I also used the same calligraphy tool to make the squiggly lines on the fish, different settings though and no blurring).

So many amazing fishes and creativity to draw inspiration from. (No pun intended!) Here's my little guy!Â
Be nice to see how you created that! @Spwiggles
@Spwiggles F A B U L O U S !
Hello, you lovely people! Here's my weird entry, I knew it would be a lot of work but (as always) I still underestimated it ^__^
I'm almost late!Â
This is Jack the weird pike, he's a bit naughty :)
@jlow That is an interesting design. Did the fish swim out of the phone?
@Eevee Good to have you back in the challenge! I like your illustration style!!
The fish challenge was a lot of fun. Such a diverse spectrum of creativity.Â
@pacer Thank you! Fish is one of my favorite creatures to draw, could not miss this one! đ

 @Spwiggles. Thank you. It helps to know there wasn't some easy way to do it. Lot work but it's beautiful.
@Spwiggles Oh wow, fairly complex!đČ
@Spwiggles I would pass out attempting something that complex
@jobot re:@Spwiggles same here :-)Â
