Abstract Zippity

Zippity was a mix of realism and abstractionism. I initially painted in gory detail a stamped metal zipper. After a few weeks I realized it could be manipulated it into two sets one on top of another. Finally, my mind saw the closed zipper as a guitar's fret board, and voila, we developed a realistic abstraction.

This was fully created within Inkscape. The boardwalk and sand were created using the wonderful Filter features. Initially I create each blade of grass, then then created clumps and assigned them to groups. (This relieved the strain on the cpu). The clouds and sky - well let's just say that is lots of painstaking work. A painting like this is time consuming - it took me several months to complete. Barry

Abstracts create different issues from realistic paintings. Here the issue is similar to a jigsaw puzzle - finding the right balance and connection with the other objects that have been created. These are definitely mind puzzlers - wonderful things to work on when you are isolated. I started the above painting in February, 2019. It was finished in December, 2019.

Sunset Moonlight Beach

In this piece I used the Filter on the ocean - working with Wood - to manipulate it into looking like gentle waves. The beach as a sand texture - again from the filter. The colored sky mostly uses rectangular shapes with fading and blurring to get the full impact of the beautiful sunset. At our website, I show the picture which inspired this painting. The finished painting pretty well captures what one can see in the photograph.
