I was too late to enter this in the August drawing challenge.
This tutorial takes a monochrome source image and treats it as a height map to generate pseudo-3d isometric projections. The intermediate steps produce attractive half-tone effects in their own right.
Two of the steps use [Align and Distribute] [Exchange positions of selected objects]; first to remove every second shape from a group and second to arrange a group of shapes along a diagonal line. This was difficult to convey in prose so here's a screen capture instead.
