Beginners' Questions Will Not Save DXF Files
  1. #1
    Threegpsi Threegpsi @Threegpsi

Hello - As of this morning, Inkscape is not allowing me to save as DXF. It allows me to save PDF, but not the DXF file after a bitmap trace. We use this function 10x weekly and only this morning this has happened. Any Ideas?

Please share an Inscape svg file that will not save as dxf, so we can compare on other systems.

    Threegpsi Threegpsi @Threegpsi

I usally just use a JPEG or PNG, do the bitmat trace and save as a DXF.

Please provide an Inkscape svg file, saved as svg at the point where it fails to save as a dxf.

Describe your OS & version, the version of Inkscape and the installer you used, plus any special hardware like tablet/stylus or multiple monitors.

I'm sorry Tyler, we only use Jpeg/PNG files, I do not use the SVG function ever in Inkscape. I use a 64bit Windows system, updated the new version of Ink after the problem started in hopes it would solve it, but it's still occurring. No special tablet, stylus or anything like that. We only use Ink to trace an image to a DXF for what we do.

I understand that you use bitmaps for tracing.

When Inkscape traces a bitmap, it writes SVG code into the document before outputting vector data to DXF (Inkscape is a native svg editor). Evaluation of the document saved as svg after it fails would be helpful to diagnose the issue. It will also be helpful to see a screenshot of your DXF output settings, when saving as DXF.

I regularly use Inkscape for bitmap tracing and output of DXF for CNC, and had no issue tracing and saving your bitmap files as dxf.

We use it normally too! It was never an issue until today. Hopefully this is what you are asking for sir.

Thank you for the file and screenshot.

I cannot duplicate the error on two machines here. I will be at a Win10 machine tomorrow and can test there. I suspect a Windows update change or other automatic update change is interfering with the save. Another program having the document open may also block saving. But again, I cannot duplicate the issue on Win 8.1 or Linux.

I'd try saving to another directory, like Documents where the user has verified permissions, and/or rebooting the computer.

    Just for the record:

Which installer of Inkscape was last used (.msi, .exe, .zip)?

    Threegpsi Threegpsi @Threegpsi
    👍

    MSI

    Any luck Tyler?

    Tyler Durden Tyler Durden @TylerDurden

I was able to save a dxf of the file without issue on a Win10 machine. :-\

I'd also try using the Reset Preferences button in the System section of Inkscape's preferences dialog. (This is a file that does not get replaced when re-installing.)

I have the same problem. I've been using an older version for the past couple years and just updated to 1.0.2 this morning and now its telling me it could not save as dxf. I've been doing this for years and never had a problem before.

  14. #14
    Tyler Durden Tyler Durden @TylerDurden

@BRIMAY79, do you get the same error message as Threegpsi?

Also, please describe your OS & version, the version of Inkscape and the installer you used, plus any special hardware like tablet/stylus or multiple monitors.

  15. #15
    Threegpsi Threegpsi @Threegpsi

What else can I try Tyler? The reset didn't work either.

I would also try using v .92.5 I use it daily and have no issues tracing and outputting dxf.

Hi Tyler, yes I'm getting the same error message as threegpsi. I'm using inkscape on a regular Windows 7 desktop machine with dual monitors. No tablet mode or anything.

I'm reinstalling v.92.5 now. This is the version I was using before with no issues.

I just loaded up v.92.5 and it works like it always has.

I am also having the same issue with Inkscape v1.0.2 not being able to "Save as" DXF file format. This is true with both DXF "Save as" options in v1.0.2.

I installed Inkscape v1.0.2 using the installer, "inkscape-1.0.2_2021-01-15_e86c870879-x64.msi".

With Inkscape v0.92.5, the one DXF "Save as" option works fine.

My PC's OS is Windows 10 Home 64-bit.

Reverting to 92.5 has cured this problem for me.  Many thanks to you all

How to reverting to 92.5 ? with windows 10?

  23. #23
    Pudding Pudding @Pudding

I downloaded from the website after deleting the previous version.

  24. #24
    lugnutLX lugnutLX @lugnutLX

I have both Inkscape v1.0.2 and v0.92.5 installed on my PC (running Windows 10).

Inkscape v1.0.2 is the one I use on a regular basis. I only use v0.92.5 when I need to export DXF files for my CAD-CAM apps. I have had no problems, so far, opening files in v0.92.5 that I have created in v1.0.2.

    1. Is this issue reported so it can be fixed?

    2. Has anyone run Inkscape from the command line to get a bit more information about the problem?

    3. Has anyone found the actual cause of the problem?

    4. I think it could be because you previously had the exe installed, then updated with the msi, without removing all the files from the exe. Can someone check and confirm / disconfirm this idea?

(downgrading Inkscape will not really help to solve the problem for all Inkscape users, so if you can, please contribute to a solution, which will benefit everyone)

I've seen that problem too lately, but now when I tried to reproduce the error everything works in v1.0.2 and v1.1 (on windows 10 64bit installed from 7z). The other day when I had the problem I recall that it worked when I used Save a copy.. instead of Save as... - maybe just a glitch, but also maybe worth a try for those who have the problem.

Thanks to all for your comments. I usually require dxf files for use in a cam program. I open an image in Inkscape to convert to dxf. I have tried to create a image in Inscape 1.02 then save as dxf to no avail (save as & save a copy)When I opened it in 0.92 it saved and opened in my Cam program perfectly. I use Windows10 64-bit Inkscape installed from Z7. I am more than happy to have both 1.02 & 0.92, the best of both worlds and I’m grateful for the use of them.

The bug was reported by @Threegpsi about a week ago. https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inbox/-/issues/4348

Users seeing the issue are welcome to help find the solution.

As a resolution, the issue looks like it's solved by reinstalling Inkscape 1.0.2 using the new installer found on inkscape.org (this comes with upgraded dependencies, which resolved the issue), see issue linked by https://inkscape.org/forums/questions/will-not-save-dxf-files/#c24132 for details.

The latest installer has cured this problem for me.

I am also having similar issue with Inkscape v1.0.2 not being able to Save a copy as DXF file format ever since i installed it.

I installed Inkscape for my windows 7 32-bit system using the installer, https://media.inkscape.org/dl/resources/file/inkscape-1.1-x86.exe

Attached is the error statement i am getting everytime i attempt the export.

Not sure if this already helps - but we´re currently in version 1.1 of Inkscape. (or 1.2 dev if you like)

We've had similar reports in https://gitlab.com/inkscape/extensions/-/issues/316

Updating WIndows 7 worked for all users who responded when suggesting that solution
