Imported a background image onto my file and just want to darken it to make a night version of the overall image, but cannot seem to find how to do this. The fill method doesn't work properly because of the pixels.
Draw a grey rectangle over your image. Open the Fill and Stroke dialog [shift+ctrl+f] and set [Blend mode: Multiply]. Now change the shade of the rectangle. A white fill has no effect on the underlying image but darker greys have progressively stronger effects. For another effect try [Blend mode: Overlay] or maybe [Blend mode: Darken] with [Opacity: 50%]. Play around with different combinations of blend modes, opacity, shades of grey and other fill colours. Use a gradient fill in your rectangle to vary the effect over the image.

I'd try putting a black rectangle in front of the image and change its opacity to set the level of "darkening".
