Sometimes when I am doing node editing I will add circular stroke markers to make it easy to see the nodes in v1.4.2. Then remove the stroke markers when finished.
The size, color, stroke-width, outline and opacity of on-canvas handles can now be customized, and their shape can be selected from a set of available handle shapes, by copying the CSS file at inkscape/share/ui/node-handles.css into the folder indicated at Edit ➞ Preferences ➞ System: User UI and modifying it. Handles will be updated live in Inkscape as when the file has been saved
I customized mine a while back. If you will notice, one of the nodes is "brighter" than the rest. It is 2 nodes sitting on top of each other. Manipulating both the handles.css and using markers makes it easier for me to spot the duplicate nodes so I can combine them.
But...but ...but. With the new Clean Up Path extension in v1.4 - I can combine dozens of them with just a few clicks. Progress!
My Inkscape Nodes are now SQUARE & WHITE.
Weren't they previously Small Black Dots? I like that way MUCH BETTER, but don't know how to change them.

The node shapes indicate the type of node.

Small black dots? What version were you using?
