Beginners' Questions Changing Color of Text objects

Is this a bug or the way Inkscape works ?

When I add a new text object, regardless of font, the object is all black.

I can't change the Fill or Stroke color until I do a Union on the text object.

From then on, I can do other commands, like break apart, and the color changes work fine.

I wanted to document this, incase it's a bug.

    Thank you.

Thanks for idea COD, but changing Fill color of text doesn't completely work correctly until I select text object and click on Union.

Before clicking Union for text object, I have since noticed that when I hold down shift key, and click on color at bottom of screen, the stroke of the text object does change to selected color. (correct process)

But, before clicking Union for text object, while NOT holding down the shift key, and click on color at bottom of screen, the fill of the text object does NOT change to selected color, even though the color to the right of Fill in the lower left does change. (probably not correct, because it's out of sync with text object)

By the way, other objects, like box, the expected procedure for changing fill and stroke work correctly without clicking on Union beforehand.

Seems like only clicking on Union for the text object makes both Fill and Stroke work as expected.

I'm OK with this work around. Being a former programmer myself, I only wanted to bring it to someone's attention, incase it's a bug, and it appears that it may be.

Does this occur in one image? Or in every image? Please upload an example for us to play with.

    Thanks for your help.

Attached is a test image file that I just created and you can see the Fill color of the selected text object does NOT match what is being displayed in the lower left.

The stroke color of the selected text object does match what is being displayed in the lower left.

When you hold shift key, and click on a different color, the Stroke color of the text object is changed and matches the stroke color in the lower left.

However, when you don't hold the shift key, and click on a different color, the Fill color of the text object is NOT changed, but the Fill color in the lower left is changed, showing different than text object.

As I've stated above, when I select the text object and then click Union, both the Fill and Stroke color changes work as expected by the documentation.

This is what is happening on my version of inkscape 1.3.2, which I just downloaded yesterday. Previously, I was using v1.x of inkscape, and both the Fill and Stroke colors were changed as expected by the documentation.

I hope you can figure this out, and maybe it's my configuration, or a bug.

But, don't go too crazy on it, I am OK with the work around that I have found.

    Thanks.

Sorry, I realize the svg file was not correct. Here is a jpg of the program and file.

Your stroke is too thick for the thin lines of the text object. Make the stroke width smaller, say 0.01in, and you'll see all is working as it's supposed to. Or you could remove the stroke altogether.

I can't change the Fill or Stroke color until I do a Union on the text object.

Stroke color isn´t affected by "outline overlay" with Text objects.

    Thank you all !

Changing display mode did the trick.

I always get in trouble with Inkscape's last settings preference. I will set something in a session. Come back hours later and start a new session and scratch my head for hours as to what I did wrong.

Wish there was a setting for "use last settings in session" preference.
