I hope I am in the right section. Sorry for my english.
I have access to a Flux Beamo CO2 laser cutter. I want to engrave a photo on wood in shades of gray rather than just black and white. I have a color photo in jpg format on my computer. I want to use inkscape to "grayscale" the photo. I would like 4 different levels of gray (namely light gray, medium gray, dark gray and almost black). I then want to vectorize this image. Finally I would like all the areas of the photo corresponding to the same level of gray to be grouped together in the same layer. At the end, there would therefore be a vectorized svg image with 4 separate layers, each grouping together all the areas of the same gray level. This would allow me to set for each of the layers the engraving power adapted to obtain a more or less dark gray.
I don't know if my need and my request are clear and I don't even know if the process that I propose is the right one. Let me know if I can better clarify my request :)
Thank you in advance for your insights, Good day !
A lot will depend on the quality of your image obviously.
You can convert the image to greyscale in a first step in any bitmap editor (my favorite is GIMP). Or in Inkscape, you could use extensions > Raster > HSB Adjust (and set saturation to 0)
Now, if you select "trace bitmap" in the paths menu. Here, the default is single colour, so select the "Multicolor" tab. Tweak your settings - don't be afraid to experiment with different settings.
Here's a bitmap (I found the image on Pexels) and what I got out of it. You'll also see my settings. I'm using the 1.3 alpha version, but the 1.2 branch works quite similar.
