I have a resident that brought me a coaster that her husband (now deceased) had made years a for her. I have one of the last originals and have scanned it to a word document. Any suggestions as to how I can create a svg file from the scan?

She want me to make sets of 4 for each of her grand daughters.

    Hello David

    I'd try :

    • trace bitmap : Single scan > Color quantization set to 4
    • to remove unwanted small holes in the resulting path : ctrl+shif+K (break apart) then ctrl++ (union).
    • simplify the result
    • use node tool to adjust imperfections, remove unwanted parts (note that holding alt now allows lasso selection of nodes with inkscape 1.3).

I share the svg file (work in progress) : not finished : I set a red fill and an semi-transparent opacity, broke apart the path. Each part I treated with node tool is turned to green. When the node edition work will be finished, I'll select all and do path union. Sorry : it's not always that accurate (I did it quickly).

I finished the node edition : see attached svg.

It will be tricky to trace the "Hawai" inscription : color quite the same as the wood, pixelated image.

I am sorry if pointing this out causes any offence.

I suppose it's possible that the the copy you have is an original, and in later years was copied ?

However a reverse google image search gives:
