Beyond the Basics Question of the Day: Document Preferences > Page > Display units

    Hello everybody,

In Document Preferences > Page tab there are two measurement unit settings, "Display units" and further down in the "Orientation > Custom Size" section, "Units".

I have a basic understanding of what both of these settings do. My question is, "can somebody give me a real-world example of having two different units of measurement set in the same document?" Why would anybody ever set these two differently (e.g., "mm" and "px")?

    Thanks!

The orientation/custom size part refers to the overall page/document size (it's set to A4 by default on my system), whereas the display units are for the objects you include on the page. So, for example, someone might want to create a PDF for printing, and they set the page size in millimetres corresponding to whatever size of paper they're using. Within the document, they might want to drag in a photo that's 500px wide, and leave a gap of 100px between the photo and the text etc. Digital photos and images are measured in pixels, but paper comes in millimetres or inches.

I rarely print so I'm not much experienced with this and others may have better explanations, but I can see the need for different options when you're dealing with an application that caters to both screen and print output.

I live in the US. I need to work with technical designs and print them, so setting the page size in US units while working in metric units is quite common in my world.

@TylerDurden  We have a winner! Finally an answer that I can wrap my head around!

    Thank you!
