Using Inkscape 1.2-alpha1 (a036733a13, 2022-03-25, custom) I have just noticed that the "visible" and "locked" indicators are hidden until the mouse hovers over the layer, at least when the layer is visible and unlocked. While this seems almost too trivial to comment on it is, for me at least, an irritation. It means that hiding or locking a layer becomes a two stage process, hover over the line in the dialog, then click the button, instead of going directly to the button.
I find this irritating because, as far as I can see, hiding the status icon is of no benefit to anyone.
