I'm trying to use inkscape for technical drawing (basketball dribble schematic). To make my drawing consistent I would like to define a stroke style to use for certain elements, another for other elements etc.
For instance I would like to use a specific stroke style for the lines indicating the hand path vs a specific stroke style for the ball path.
Is there any way to define custom styles like I would define in a word processor? If that's not possible how do you recommend to proceed?
To keep a style or tool setting you like make your adjustments - double-click the icon of that specific tool in the tool bar which opens its settings and click "Take from selection". Afaik we can´t save multiple styles but you can copy&paste styles from a selection.
Polygon is spot on. What I tend to do (as a back up of sorts) is to save my shapes (what you refer to as stroke styles) into different svg files, which are titled in a way I recognize. You can always open up a saved svg file, copy what you need from it, and then paste into your current svg file any (or all) of the objects you need ... and then close the svg file(s) from which you copied.
Also, it may be helpful to download these svg files I made a few years ago ... to see some of the many possibilities within Inkscape. They were made in Inkscape and can easily be opened, edited, and used as you like.
@Polygon I have not been able to follow your instructions (maybe because on inkscape 1.2 the things work a bit differently?). I have not been able to find "Take from selection". Anyway I understood the principle and this is what I did:
- Copy (Ctrl c) the object with the stroke I'm interested in
- Click on Select tool
- Select the object to which I want to apply the style
- Paste style (Ctrl Shift v)
@Ken wilson: I followed your link but I have not been able to see the svg files or download them :(
Yes, they are immediately below my first, original post. You have to click on each one - they are svg files - download them, and open them in Inkscape. These svg files are immediately above Kirstie's post there.

The instruction is loud and clear - I can´t describe in another way or again.
Spiffspaceman: I couldn't find Ken's nice styles either--and then I realized I had to scroll up! 🤣
