I've been using Inkscape for only a short time, but a problem has developed that I don't know how to to fix. When I attempt to draw a simple shape, like a  rectangle, the resulting shape is not whole, but has notches, or cutouts in it. Have I inadvertently changed something in the default settings?

You have probably set the stroke style to dashes.
