Beginners' Questions Trying to save my image button the save feature changes the width

I have created a button in Inkscape. I am trying to save the button as a ".png" file. If I change the width of the button and then click outside of the width text box, then Inkscape will change the height of the image without my permission. Also this works the opposite way as well. If I try and change the height and click outside of the height box my width will be changed without my permission. Attached is an image of my screen and my button. I am trying to save my .png button with a dimension of 126 X 43 pixels, but Inkscape keeps changing it before I can save it? Someone please help me?

Inkscape is changing the width or height to maintain the aspect ratio.

The image size on canvas has a very slightly different aspect ratio to what you are trying to export to ( about 3.04 vs 3.07 )

Also if you are exporting in pixels, pixels have to be whole numbers, you cannot export 1/2 pixel for example.

If you are exporting small images, then rounding to the next pixel will appear more pronounced.

    👍

Try setting the size up here instead. The export size is always proportional.

Thank you Bleke, it works, however it occasionally changes the size, so I have to do it a couple of times. Its easier than trying to adjust the image size in the image size section of the image I posted.

I guess Ill be able to move forward now. Thanks again.

Hello, I am not having a great day with Inkscape. I created a button (Simply for testing, nothing fancy, just learning).

    I have two issues.

1.) Not able to specify the exact size of the image in pixels. If I type in the width of the button and change text box focus to the height text box the width will change from what I just set it to ? The software seems to be fighting my attempts to set a specific image size.

I want to learn how to save the image as a .png file.

2.) I am able to save the image as a .png file, however it is not saving just the button , but the whole page as a .png file. I followed the steps outlined in this youtube video however his dialog boxes look different than mine, and again I get the same result of only being able to save the whole image as a .png file, and not just the image itself. Here is the video I referenced : https://youtu.be/BEiDlB8avMY

So can someone please help me out?

Merging this with the original question.

    1) As stated above, the button should be made the desired size in pixels before exporting.

    2) If the Export dialog is scrolled up, the selection buttons for Document, Page, Selection and Custom are available.

I made a little video clip for you, Capulet. :)

I hope video can be embedded in a post...

It doesn't seem like it can. The video should be at the paper clip next to this post.

    Hi Tyler,

Let's break this down because I am not getting the answers I need. If you find this question too petty, then possibly someone else can help me. I say that with deep respect sir. No offense.
Please I just need help, as I am under a deadline for a project.

Let's break it down to just the first issue.

#1. I am not able to set the definite size of my image in pixels. So what am I doing wrong here? Anyone?

    Here is the issue.

For an image in a size of pixels, If I type in the height of my image (A button in this case see my attached svg file) in the text box control and then click out of the height text box into the width text box then the height will change without my permission. Conversely if I change the width and click into the height text box the width I just set is changed by inkscape without my permission.

Strange, can someone please, please help me out.

#1. You can't change the aspect ratio in the export dialog. If you change one value the other will always change too. Set the size in the tool controls bar at the top of the window.

    First issue:

To create or edit the artwork in px, the Document Properties dialog is where pixels can be set for the page and the display (rulers& controls).

After the document properties units (px) are set, the artwork can be created/edited to the desired pixel dimensions. (This also determines the object's aspect ratio.) The object height and width can be changed using the Select tool controls above the workspace.

When the artwork is completed at the desired size, the object(s) can be selected and Export dialog can be set to export just the selected objects. In the dialog, the pixel size can be kept at the original, or it can be changed, but the aspect ratio will remain the same (whereby changing width or height will update the other to maintain the aspect).
