Beginners' Questions Navigating the Layers and Objects (Vers 1.2)

    Hi All

I’m new to the forum/Inkscape, so this may sound naïve, but...  I’ve kind of got to grips with going through the Layers and Objects list in order to identify where, for instance, a single path resides on the canvas etc,  i.e. if you click on a path in the list, the “wheel of arrows” shows what’s been selected in the canvas window and where (attached pic illustrates).  It seems that to do this requires an individual mouse click on each object in the list to properly select the object in the canvas, so as to flag it up.

I was just wondering if after selecting a single path in the list, it might be possible to just use the arrow keys (cursor control keys) to page down sequentially through the objects below the first one selected, to fully select each one in turn below it without clicking it.  This would be a bit like how you can page through photos in File Explorer and the picture shows in the preview pane without having to actually click on each individual file.

It would just be dexterously easier to use the arrow keys while keeping a watch in the canvas and therefore quicker to bang through a long list, esp on a two screen set up or a large monitor.

    Hope this makes sense, thanks.

Holding shift key and clicking the end of list should select all items in-between if that´s what you want.

    Thanks Polygon,

Useful tip, but I was hoping to be able to select each separate path as you would if you used a mouse click, but using the down arrow instead.  So, in the picture which has path3018 selected, it would be great if you could just hit the down arrow key to be able to select the one below, path9945-2 and down tap again to select path9945-3 separately and so on just by tapping the down arrow.  The way I’m working I would be able to save a ton of time if I was able to do this as I've got a big canvas and a lot of tiny objects that I need to keep on specific layers.  I wonder if there's another keyboard combo that might be able to achieve this?

In the workspace, Tab selects the next object, Shift+Tab selects the previous object.

Tyler, thanks.  I just tried that and I see what you mean when you click in the "workspace" first, rather than in the list.  Maybe it's something I need to get used to, but I'd find it loads easier if you were able to click in the list and have the same thing happen.  To be able to tab through Layers, sub layers and objects using the arrow keys would be the icing on the cake.

I can’t see that this has been discussed on the forum but found this:

“Layers and Objects dialog Arrow-key navigation no longer works”

Would it be too cheeky to make a feature request of this I wonder?  I think this would be in:

     inkscape.org/forums/beyond/feature-request/ but not sure…

I’m so glad I discovered Inkscape and think the devs need a medal.  It’s a brilliant application and I salute those who are improving it bit by bit – Thank you.
