Hi, I have 2 sketches in .jpg and .xcf format. They are the keel to a ship I want to build and are too large to scan in my A3 scanner so I have scanned the bow section and the stern section as large as I can and would now like to join the 2 pieces in the correct length/shape. Can anyone help please ??

Where do you get stuck? I mean I would import the 2 scans - reduce the opacity of the one on top and move till the alignment suits your needs. Set opacity back to 100. Group scans if needed to scale to final dimensions with a helper object like a rectangle of specified size.

Thanks for that speedy reply, as a newbie I have the 2 sketches on screen (as well as an A4 outlined page) but don't know how to "reduce the Opacity of the one on top". Can you explain please ??

\thanks for  that, I don't have anything like the screen you show. I will have another look at what I am supposed to do.

Not sure what you´re saying. You don´t have the color swatches, opacity (O) entry etc at the bottom of your Inkscape window?

Thanks again for that information I now have what I was looking for. I have the 2 sketches joined as you described and have saved the drawing. Unfortunately I did not resume the 100% Opacity so one end shows a bit lighter than the other. I will do the same again but will remember the 100% opacity next time. Once again a big Thank You.
