Beginners' Questions Help sought: Objects have disappeared from layers in the "Layers and Objects" menu

    Dear all,

I am new(ish) to inkscape, but have so far found it really intuitive for my purpose (logo design). I installed Inkscape about a week ago. Everything was going smoothly until I tried to use the mesh tool to change a mesh gradient on a rectangle, and then Inkscape (v1.2.2, Windows 10, installed with file inkscape-1.2.2_2022-12-09_732a01da63-x64.exe) crashed suddenly.

Thinking nothing of it, I re-launched by opening my file (I am saving every minute religiously, so had lost nothing - or so I thought), but the layers were "corrupted" in the sense that they do not display the objects they contain anymore (the triangle / arrow to display them is missing from the line of the layer that should contain them). Layers still display sub-layers, but all objects seem to be gone from the menu, regardless of the layer depth. I neither can see them in the menu or select them individually on the display area. I can only select layers.

Note that the objects seem to still display fine and that the size of the file seems coherent with what it should be (nothing there indicates that data has been lost).

At the bottom of the screen, the contextual information indicates the correct (expected) number of objects in the selected layer. For example: "Layer of 4 objects in group svg5 (layer Body)." if I select the layer "body" by clicking on the display area.

I tried to reset the preferences, to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated, I would hate having to re-do the work, especially as the data seems to still be there... somehow...    :(

Many thanks in advance for your consideration.

    Hi,

Many thanks for your help. The "wheel" does not appear in my version of Inkscape, so I cannot see this "only show layers" option.

Nevertheless, your suggestion inspired me to look for "layers" in preferences, and I found a way to get my objects back: in Preferences --> Behavior --> Selecting, I noticed that "Ignore hidden objects and layers" and "ignore locked objects and layers" were selected. I de-selected these two options, and got all my objects back (note: *regardless* of their "locked" and "hidden" status - they are all back).

It thus seem that the crash impacted the local installation of inkscape, not the actual file where my work was saved, and that a manipulation of the above options was enough to get the previous desired behavior back.

Again, thanks for your help on this matter.

Unfortunately, the mesh tool still reliably crashes the application. For the record, here is what I do to reproduce the crash:

    • Select a very specific rectangle (visible, not locked, inside a layer that is visible, not locked) in my objects - this rectangle is filled yith a 1x1 mesh gradient
    • Select mesh tool
    • Double click on the topmost edge of the rectangle to add a new column
    • Select the inner round handle of the topmost middle diamond node to apply distortion
    • --> crash happens as soon as I try to move this handle

Note: if I create a different rectangle and work with it similarly (i.e., apply mesh gradient, select mesh tool, add column, then shape mesh), no crash happens. It seems that this one object in particular in my work was cursed by the inkscape gods...

    I suggest updating to v 1.3.2. https://inkscape.org/release/1.3.2/windows/

There are some issues with 1.4.
