Yes, me again, with something I assume is mindlessly simple!
I downloaded an SVG from Pixabay. It's the silhouette of an angelshark, but not the right species for my purpose. I want to edit it to match the species I want.
I can in no way get it to let me edit anything! Even if I merely try to resize the critter, I end up resizing its frame.

What do I do to edit it?

I guess it´s a path clipped image or masked. Try Object->Clip->Release Clip or ->Mask->Release Mask. Otherwise upload or link/to the file.
Looks like that is probably it! I am entirely self-taught with Inkscape, and I am completely ignorant of clips.
It also looks like I'll need to get on to the fine points. Just removing all the clips destroys the image!
