I am wanting to create a circle that is 8 inches diameter, and in the middle it has a gap on either side of 1/4 inch. I thought perhaps if I converted to path I could then delete nodes to create this "break" in the middle however does not work. The only option I could come up with was to draw a circle then put a rectangle across the middle with white fill, to create the desired effect.
The issue however is I have multiple circles of different sizes that I need to create in the one file that all have this same effect, so becomes very cumbersome managing a lot of layers and shapes within. I thought there might be an easy solution. I have pasted an image of what I am trying to achieve.
Be sure the rectangle is above the circle (here that's the case).
Select both circle and rectangle, do path>difference (ctrl+-) : the result is showed on screenshot
with node tool (n) click on the straight unwanted path (the two nodes of the segment become blue and their handles appear) and click the "Delete segment between two non-end points" icon (red circle on screenshot) on control bar.
repeat for the other straight segment : you're done
This is how I´d tackle this: Create a pattern stroke with 2 symmetrical gaps - copy - select first circle - Go Path->Effects->Pattern along Path->Pattern copies=Single stretched - copy circle - select multiple other circley and go Path->Paste Path Effect. Depending on that Pattern you might need to rotate circles by 90° what can be done in one go with the Transform Panel:

You're almost there :

Here's another way:
Thanks everyone, great suggestions! I really appreciate your help :)
