After tracing an image and filling in the selected areas with the appropriate color I noticed that many of the filled in areas are unable to be selected. Those regions still exist and are filled with color yet cannot be moved or selected. As a reference I have selected the surrounding areas above the one that I would prefer to select. I am trying to select the tan area with the white highlight directly beneath the mouth. I’ve attached a screenshot of what I can see.
Also, what is the difference between a "path" and an "object"?
Looks like you have a number of objects selected. Hard to tell which is the issue. Feel free to share the file or a closly matching example that has the issue.
The visible objects that cannot be selected might be in the locked layer. They might also be locked themeselves; this can be checked using the Objects panel.
I casually refer to anything within the Inkscape workspace as an object, including:
As it happens, I have a version of the SVG file for that image in the screenshot. But it does not contain the tan object. Only the white highlight within the tan object.
Since you've gotten rid of the filters in that file now, maybe it will be easier to select that object?
If you're still having trouble, you could send me a file with the problem, and I'll look at it.
Use the Objects view, I had the same issues. The reason was my top-level object was unlocked however an inner Path of that object was locked. This stopped me from being able to select it. I could unlock it from the Object view, and selection started working again.😃
I encountered the problem. In my case I unintentionally locked the whole layer so that no objects were selectable anymore. By clicking the closed locker of Layer 1 on objects thumbnail, I have been able to select all objects again.

@TylerDurden I've updated my post, I hope it helped clarify a bit.
