    Dear forum users,

I've refactored the way image uploads work and this is what you need to know.

Firstly, I've enabled the tag security on comments, so you can no longer post script or iframe tags in comments. Most people will have been unaware it was possible to do this, but now it's not. These are removed.

Secondly, Images are now ALLOWED inside of your comments. This is a highly requested feature, so it should be tested by users. It works like this: When you drag and drop an image onto the editor, it will upload it to your gallery automatically and embed it into the content of your comment, you can use the ckeditor to move it around. If you copy and paste html from a website with an image inside it, it will grab all the images and upload those too.

Thirdly, you should see images in the attachments draw (at the bottom when you click on the paperclip) have three options instead of the two as before. The first option is a paperclip, this means "attachment" and the file will appear in the paperclip dropdown. The second is "gallery" that means your image will appear in a carosel gallery below your comment. The third is the new one, that is "embedded", clicking that will pop the image into the editor (if it's not already there) and allow you to use the image in your comment content.

If there's a bug somewhere (this is new) you may see one of the filters that will filter out hard linking external sites, that would happen if the javascript fails and the html content still contains an external link.

Existing hard links to external sites will be cleaned up as an administrative action. Hopefully this will be fairly simple. Please post any issues or comments here and please do HARD REFRESH when testing as it could take your browser a day or two to flush itself of the old javascript if you want to make sure you're seeing the new version.

Unfortunately, I can't understand most of what you said.  Images already were allowed in messages, but for some reason, some people where having a hard time showing images that are hosted on other servers.  That's where I was confused, because I could show images from my server.  But Dillerkind couldn't.  I was just about to test one of his myself, but I saw the new changes, and could not immediately figure out how to use them.

When you say " copy and paste html from a website with an image inside it" which part of the html do you mean?  Do you mean just the image's url?  Or do you mean we need to look at the source code and copy out chunks of it?

Ok, here comes testing.  2 of mine, one of Dillerkind's.

Ok, so why does the image from my server show up (blue celtic knot).  But the image from Dillerkind's image host not show up unless you click on the earth icon?

Oh wait, I think I get it.  Hold on, 2nd try

Uh-oh....  Looks like it only embedded the earth icon, rather than the image.

Also, the blue celtic knot image no longer has it's original URL.  Now it shows https://media.inkscape.org/media/resources/thumb/celtknot44.png  when the address I entered was https://inkscapecommunity.com/jd/imgs/celtknot44.png  It looks like it's been uploaded to the gallery, although I can't actually find it in the gallery.  People probably expect the image to keep it's original location.  I have seen people who would not attach an image if it meant their image would be uploaded to another server.

So now, the only way to show an image in the message, is to use the "embed in html" option?  That hovertext should probably be "Display mode" then.

To be honest, I thought we already had all the features we needed for images, before.  It's just that for some reason there was a problem with Dillerkind's images.  And that problem apparently still exists.

I do really, really like the inline feature though.  But I don't think we need an option where you have to click on an icon to see the image on lightbox or carousel or whatever.  If someone wants a lightbox or carousel feature, that's fine, as long as the image is already showing in the message.

If there were some way to keep the inline feature, but go back to the other options, that would be great!

Is the only way to have the inline feature, if the image is uploaded to the gallery?

Oh I see.  The earth icon has nothing to do with the "gallery mode" necessarily.  We're still back to why Dillerkind's images won't show up, and mine will.

Dillerkind's are likely to be a special case, I will have to investigate it.

Are 'object' and 'embed' blocked, too?

Ok, how do I embed externally hosted images inline?

If the URL isn't working and you really want it inline, download the file to your hard disk and click the upload file button, select the file (you can also drag and drop onto the editor from your file manager).

I got his into the body by first attaching, then dragging into the texarea from the gallery in a separate browser window. Surely there is an easier way.

    EDIT:

....and after seeing it in the preview, it shows as blocked in the posted image.

It's always amazing how many different ways people put images into comments 😁 thanks for testing all this Tyler.

So the way it's supposed to work is, you type in the name of the gallery item and hit the search button. The blocked image only appears if the javascript has failed to sanitise the html and the python has to clear up the confusion. So it's a bug either way. Dragging from the desktop/file manager should still work, as should putting in a url into the search box.

Lol, I'm just trying to get anything to work...

    • Dragging from windows explorer does not work.
    • Uploading a file and clicking the display as image does not work.
    • Uploading a file and clicking the embed into HTML does not work.
    • Pasting a URL from dropbox does not work.

Using Google Chrome, Win 8.1, 10

    Thanks,

    TD

I really would like to go back to the previous attachments setup.  It worked, and is much less confusing than this 3 option thing.  No one wants to use the option where the image only shows at full size if you click  on it.  So it's not needed at all.

As I've advocated from the start, we need full size images showing in messages.  Not tiny postage stamp thumbnails.  As far as I can tell, images which previously were showing at their full size, have now all been changed back to tiny 1 inch thumbnails.  This is not what is expected of a graphics forum.  People visiting a graphics forum expect to see....graphics.  And they don't want to have to click on a tiny thumbnail to see the full size.  They'll give up and leave if they can't find anything nice to look at.

[Opinion:  When we keep changing a major feature such as attachments, it leads to lack of faith both in the forum software and forum's ability to function, as a whole.  If we want it to be considered as a serious effort for an official forum, we can't keep changing things around.  The whole reason, purportedly, for changing the attachments feature, was to "fix" a problem for one member, which is actually is a problem with one of the servers, not the attachments feature.  That problem still exists.]

Tyler, can you join me on chat.inkscape.org? I'd like to try a few things with a video chat/screen sharing to see how to improve the design more.

Brynn, I always try and help individual users, but attachments were effecting multiple people (including me)

In any case, could we place have full size images?  And return all the images which were previously at their full size, back to their full size?
