I've been using Inkscape for several years to create and edit ongoing variant games of Diplomacy. Some of these maps were adapted from existing variants, though several are original scenario designs.
These maps were built with functionality in mind. Units need to be easily differentiated from territories and so on. Many maps use simplified three-letter abbreviations for regions (a convention from the board game).
Below are some albums of games I have run and/or developed. imgur has made it more difficult to order one's images in a large album, so some of these are a bit disorganized.
2016: The Two Towers. An adaptation of an existing Middle Earth variant.
2016-19: 1812 Overture. An original Napoleonic era variant. This album is the latest iteration of a map that has gone through many drafts.
2017-18: Dissolution. An original variant set in 1992, just after the breakup of the Soviet Union.
2018-19: War in the Americas. An existing variant adapted for automated play on PlayDiplomacy.com. This album contains a number of drafts as well as the final product.
Currently running: Saga of the Nine. An original alt-history / alt-geography / norse mythology game.
I've attached a couple samples from the above as well.
