I am trying to make a calligraphy looking piece but, was told that using regular fonts won't work because the plotter will try to get an outline and fill in the letters. Single stroke fonts were mentioned.
How would I go about getting a calligraphy handwritten look to plot through Inkscape?
You can try: type the text you want to engrave - select and go Extensions->Text->Hershey Text->Font face: try the "Hershey Script" variants. in Live preview.
In Inkscape 1.2 I type a text, than "Path → Object change into path". So the text split in words and the words split in letters with path and fill. This letters I marked by all knots editing plus shift-key and all "Path → Join" all. The letters join to word and lines with words again (not "object → group" or "path → combination").
Vladimir Script in Word and Inkscape is a hand lettering font, but I do not know if it is free.
In Inkscape 1.2 seems to be a function creating a new SVG-font ("text → SVG font art editor") with pen, calligraphic feather or paint brush without a fill ("path → fill between the path"). At the moment I have problem with these function. I have to work with it a little bit more to understand it.
If you would like to have a new font, you have to install it, because the OS managed the fonts, not the program like Inkscape or LibreOffice.
Download a font ( for example from fontspace.com/category/handwriting,calligraphy or 001fonts.com/handwritten-fonts.html )
→ change to the folder (→ if necessary unpacked it)→ right mouse button →
if you use Linux (you have to be administrator for this) open the font in the font viewer → install
if you use MS install.
Here you will find the newer version of my script. ( hobbyschneiderin24.net/forums/topic/189095-vom-bild-zum-plot-plotten-f%C3%Bcr-dummies/page/3/#comment-2783254 up.picr.de/47607068aq.pdf )

Try this https://inkscape.org/forums/other/free-license-font-from-libreoffice-or-ms-word-to-inkscape/ with free fonts from fontspace.com/category/handwriting,calligraphy or 1001fonts.com/handwritten-fonts.html . New: up.picr.de/47512637su.pdf
