I have setup a grid at a resolution of 1/8" (0.125"). My document is setup for inches.
For a basic test, I create a small 5" x 3" rectangle. Then I create a 1/4" circle offset from the top left corner by 1/4" in both the x and y axes. This circle snaps correctly to the guides and ends up at x: .25, y: .25 with a width and height of .25".
Then I select the newly created circle and move it to the right along the x axis. When moving the circle it will snap as I move about the grid, but when placed, the final coordinates read x: .625 (correct), y: .252 (incorrect).
Snapping can be applied to a number of object features: centers, boxes, cusp nodes, etc. Ensure the specific snap point is active. More points may make snapping unpredictable.
@TylerDurden - thanks for the tips! It looks like the cusp node is what is snapping to the grid and it is off the centerline from the midpoint of the bounding box. After some fiddling and much cursing I was able to figure out how to set the cusp node back to the midpoint of the bounding box and also change snapping points to other object features. It still feels a little unpredictable to me, but now I have a good starting point.

Any ideas what could be causing this .002" shift?

How do you turn off "snap point" or cusp node to cusp node as I want to randomly scall a text path?
Sorry. Scale a text path.
