Thanks so much for the reply! That's exactly what I encountered with my scan. I only attempted a centerline once and it did become.... awkward. Are you saying that I should use the scan as a "trace" layer and then use the tablet to trace nodes/paths over top of the scanned handwriting? Also, what sort of tablet would be good for this and compatible with Inkscape? Thanks!!
I understand, what sort of tablet would be good for this and compatible with Inkscape? Would I draw overtop of my handwriting in a new layer to draw the single path? Or how would that work? Really appreciate your input!
I have a reMarkable tablet where I can write and draw and then export as SVG, single line or outline depending on selected tool. I wrote a blogpost on this.
Very interesting! Thanks for mentioning that. Something like that could possibly fit right into the workflow of what I'm looking for, but it's pretty expensive. I will look into that for the future, though!
I recently built a plotter to attempt this concept. Is there anybody out there with experience/tips/tricks/input to help me accomplish this?
I want to be able to write something out on a card, scan it, then convert it so that a plotter program can read it and redraw it to more cards.
If just scanning and converting to SVG is not the best way to do this, how else can I go about this?
*note* I do not want to create a font, I want to basically recreate fluid handwriting.
Thanks in advance! Any help would be appreciated. I'm new to this!
The major problem is that when you scan or bitmap trace, solid lines almost always become tramlines based upon the thickness of the scanned stroke.
Even making the line superthin still creates this problem. There is centreline trace, but it loses some of the original shape.
The easiest way to do it is to get a very cheap tablet device of any kind and use it to produce a single line path.
The possibly apply path>simply to it.

No, unless you are interested in calligraphic script which has varying thickness.
You really need to produce a single path from the input device,
