Beginners' Questions Hidden paths preventing sensible union

I have been trying to draw something with Inkscape one bit at a time using Calligraphy, the eraser, simplify, and occasionally unioning the paths I've built. I'm now at a point where I'm happy with the overall shape I'm working with, and wanted to use union one more time to combine the paths into one. However, when I do so, I'm now getting unexpected behavior that results in a very small subsection of the drawn area surviving.

After searching around, I learned about the display modes and checked to see if the path was odd. Turning on view->Display Mode->Outline Overlay shows a ton of path lines I had no idea I was implicitly creating along the way, and now I'm a bit stuck.

I've attached what it looks like with the Normal display mode, and what it looks like with the Outline Overlay display mode, as well as the SVG.

The SVG has been created entirely in Inkscape

I used an XP Pen Tablet to create the image, which is a display tablet.

    I'm on Ubuntu Linux 22.04, with Inkscape 1.1.2 (0a00cf5339, 2022-02-04).

Is it possible to delete away everything which doesn't construct the filled area, and combine it into one path?

    Thanks in advance!

The nature of your workflow is path clipped shapes. To get the idea of the underlying structure you can go Object->Clip release clip. For this kind of work Iยดd go the LPEย "Power Stroke" route. Quick sketch applied:
