Beginners' Questions Is Inkscape gonna work better in M1 chip?

Does anyone know how much performance boost will inkscape gain from the new Apple silicon, M1 chip? This is important since it's gonna be a deal breaker for buying new macbook.

I’ve taken delivery of a M1 8Gb Mac Mini today.
installed Inkscape and Rosetta and it flies.
so much quicker than my 2012 i5 Mac Mini with 16Gb of ram.
looking forward to working with it now.

I'm using InkScape 1.0.2 on a MacBook Air with M1 chip and it runs a bit better, than on my iMac from late 2015, sadly far away from fluid like Affinity Designer or Amadine. I really look forward to a native M1 version...

I got the M1, 16GB/MacMini and had high hope regarding performance but it was a step back; all moves come to a crawl compared to my beloved native Intel beta version from 2015 on an iMac/late2011.

What is helping noticeable is to disable AA (antialiasing).

And what @ZappoB mentioned: Miles away from the speed of Affinity Suite, considering what chunks (up to 2.5GB per app) of software that is.

I'm toying with the idea of using Inkscape-for-Windows via Crossover, but not sure if that's just another bottleneck.

An M1 version would be a dream, but I'm guessing this won't happen till the end of my days - and I don't think Applejuicefactory is making it any easier for developers in any way past and coming years…

I have a 2020 I7 Imac and recently got an M1 mac air. I use Inkscape on a daily basis for my work and my files are usually pretty much heavy loaded with a lot of objects and text. I really wanted to work on a Mac for that fabulous 5k screen but to be honest the experience of using Inkscape on that machine is utterly horrible. Now just so I could check all of my options, I bought an M1 to see if Inkscape would work a bit better on it and to my amazement it runs just as well if not faster than on my Windows machine ( the difference in performance when running it on Linux is marginal and not worth the hassle ). Now either Rosetta translates Inkscape to ARM better than Inkscape is written for x86 or the M1 is simply way faster than the I7 10700. I won't speculate but I will add that not porting Inkscape to ARM will be a hugely missed opportunity. I tried every other vector graphics software alternative out there and only Illustrator got close to Inkscape in terms of features and ease of use. The only reason why I would use Illustrator would be the insane speed that its GPU accelerated renderer achieves but given that Inkscape has the potential to run way faster than it currently does, I think porting it to ARM would really tighten the gap between the two softwares and finally give people a better alternative to the lacking Affinity designer and Corel Draw.

M1 problem checking in. Text disappears. Really simple Inkscape file, I mean, bare minimum, nothing but some text objects. Save, close, re-open... some of them are gone. Gone gone. Unless there is some tiers way to find them that I am missing. I switched to outline view and do not see them, and I inspected the XML and they are not there.

Tried a new svg, rebooted, etc. No dice and it is really unfortunate!

jmkeuning that could be from using 1.1. I switched back to 1.02 as well as 1.1 is ridiculously buggy at this moment.

I would like to make a group to fund the development of an M1 version. I have opened a thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Inkscape/comments/rh8qkn/mac_m1_users_why_dont_we_fund_the_development_of/ , hoping to get some feedback or support

There's no Mac-developer onboard. Just saying.

Inkscape works fine on the M1 Macbook Air. In my experience (uisng 16gb ram) it works as well as or better than any previous macbook I've had, and likely better than the macbook pro with any intel processor through 2021 based on very limited experience with a recent model (comparing the M1 macbook air to the more recent intel macbook pro). I recommend the macbook air to anyone that asks, unless there's a highly specific reason to do something else--it is hands-down the best general purpose laptop on the market I'm aware of. Inkscape works as well as expected with it's generally lengthy delays in overall compatibility with Apple software and hardware. I've used in regularly on macos 11 (Big Sur).

I'm fairly new to Inkscape and just getting used to it. I'm using an M1 Pro and I feel it should be buttery smooth. Its not. I get screen tearing even when shrinking and moving the page area even with nothing at all present in the project. Everything seems to be working and I have not had a crash so it is a minor annoyance. If what was said above is true and there are no Mac developers at Inkscape then I'm amazed it works at all. Perhaps they should get a Mac developer or two on board. I'm hesitant to donate if the focus is entirely on Windows.

Bhang @Bhang, Inkscape is developed and maintained by volunteers. If you have a Mac developer in mind who would like a challenge, feel free to introduce them to Inkscape and the developer team.

FWIW, Inkscape is focused on being cross-platform... primarily Linux/Windows/Mac, but the source is available to port to any OS.

@Bhang It's not much better on Linux or Windows either. I think there's only one dev for the Mac version ( working on an Intel Mac ) so don't get your hopes too high.

It does get a little annoying, but not so much that I can't use it. Inkscape has an incredibly robust feature set for a free app and it does work and look great so I really can't complain.

I wish I did know a Mac Dev who was willing to help out. Unfortunately I do not. I will keep an ear to the ground.
