For those of you unfamiliar with my system, I have a late 2009 iMac running macOS 10.13.6 (the highest system it will run). I was running Inkscape for Mac 1.0.2.
I finally had Inkscape working (at least, with only known issues). So I tried to install Ink/Stitch, an extension for creating embroidery machine designs in Inkscape. This particular extension was a test version for High Sierra.
Part of my problem may be that I did not remember to shut down Inkscape after it had opened the extensions folder for me. But I did follow the rest of the Ink/Stitch directions: I put the zip file in the extensions folder and decompressed it there, where it made a folder for all the many Ink/Stitch bits.
I then shut down Inkscape (oops!) and restarted it. It started to start up and then crashed.
I tried again. Inkscape said that I had been trying to open windows when it had been shut down and did I want to reopen them. I said yes.
It crashed again.
I tried moving all the many bits of Ink/Stitch out of their folder and into the extensions folder.
Same result.
I tried telling Inkscape that no, I did not want to reopen my windows.
Same result.
I trashed all of the Ink/Stitch stuff and tried again. Same result.
So now Inkscape isn't running at all. It rapidly dies on every attempt, whether I'm trying to open a file or just the program.
Sorry to pester you all again, folks. . . .

Any suggestions (she asked nervously . . . )?
Thanks!
I'd delete the preferences.xml file... Inkscape will make a new one on launch. Maybe that will help.
There is a 3rd-party webpage that describes how to delete the preferences.xml file. https://designedbliss.com/how-to-reset-inkscape-to-default-settings/ . At the bottom of the page is guidance on recent Inkscape versions.
I'm not running MacOS, so I can't vouch for the accuracy of the info on that site.
Well, I didn't use the page, but I did delete the file. And it worked! I'm back in action.
I'll wait a few days to get my courage up to try Ink/Stitch, again, but if it does it's trick again, I know what to do. Thanks!
