Beginners' Questions Can't select objects in workspace or Put Text on Path

I'm currently working on a very large project with approximately 40,000 objects. There's a huge portion of the objects that I can no longer select/highlight any of. These are all in one large folder. Using the Selector Tool does nothing. However, if I use the Node Tool I can select the object. When I switch to the Selector Tool it will highlight the object (and show it highlighted in the Layers and Objects menu) but then when I press the object with the Selector Tool it deselects it (so I can't move or rotate the object) and in the Layers and Objects panel it jumps from the object to the folder it is grouped in. I've tried un-grouping the objects from the folder but Inkscape just crashes every time I try to. Also, I can select the object in the Layers and Objects panel. None of the objects are locked or hidden. All of the objects are paths, by the way. Additionally, when I put Text on Path, the text disappears. And I can't figure out why. It's driving me crazy and I can't get anything done now. Please help! Thanks.

I'm on Version 1.4. I've reinstalled multiple times, tried different versions, all to no avail.ย

I've cleaned the document using File>Clean up document. That cut the filesize in half.

I also deleted the large paths off to the side of the detail area (the forests).

If you intend to work with the remaining image, I suggest replacing many of the repetitive objects with clones.

    The modified version is attached.

Awesome, thanks! The decreased file size should help a ton. Sorry, I'm pretty new to Inkscape. Can you explain in a little more detail what you mean by replacing the repetitive objects with clones? Which repetitive objects would I be cloning? The buildings/houses? The streets? Do you delete the originals after making clones? And ultimately, what is the purpose of doing so?

Also, any idea why text disappears when I use Put on Path? Obviously, I'm trying to put the street names on the streets.

    Thanks again!

Many of the cul-de-sacs are circles of the same size, which can be clones of a single circle. Many of the buildings could be clones too.ย Clones take up less file space.

The text on path issue is due to the layers being moved (transforms). Layers can be turned into ordinary groups, ungrouped, then regrouped to remove the transforms, then converted back to layers.

I've done this to the attached file.

Ah, Okay. That makes sense. Thanks for the info.

Awesome! You're amazing! Thank you so much for the help. Much appreciated.

Tyler, are you using Windows 10, 11, Linux, MAC? I'm using Windows 11 and Inskcape crashes so much it's crazy. I've read it's a Windows 11 thing, but wanted to ask how it works for you and to see if you're using something other than Windows 11. Thanks.

    Win10 Inkscape v1.3.2

It is slow going due to the size of the design, but it doesn't crash.

Ah, okay. I did try 1.3.2 and 1.2.2 but both had problems crashing. I wish I had a machine with Win 10. I've considered doing a dual boot Linux and trying that out. I'm assuming that would be more stable/less prone to crash. Thanks for the quick reply.

    Linux is very stable. I'm dual-booting Mint/Win10.

Oh, cool. I was wondering which version of Linux to do. I still need to use programs like Acrobat, Excel, Photoshop, etc. for this project. I was going to go Ubuntu, but maybe Mint would be better.

Mint is Ubuntu based, very easy to install, use and maintain. Many Win users go with Mint.

Cool. I'll give it a go.
