Up until a few days ago everything Inkscape worked fine for me. Multi-layered files showed up in the layers panel as expected. I was working on a new design with 6 separate color layers within one svg file and it seems that was collapsed into one. I tried opening some old files that I knew were multi-layerd and printed out just fine on my plotter. Now, they too open as a single layer. I have a copy of a python file that is supposed to generate 2 layers, one red square and the other a blue circle. However, they both come out in a single layer. I am at a loss to figure out what has happened. I am using Inkscape 1.3.2 (091e20e, 2023-11-25, custom).
Thanks Tyler. I might have solved the problem. I was going to send the requested file to you, but decided to give it one last try. The offending file can now be imported into a custom template with the separate color layers clearly identified in the layers panel. All I did since sending in my original post was to upgrade to 1.4.2. Seems strange to me that now it works when it was never an issue with 1.3.2 until it became one.
If you wouldn't mind keeping this post active for the next two weeks while I test more files, it would be appreciated.
Irwin - after you upgraded - did you happen to reset your preferences? I ask because I see users have these "one day it works - next day it doesn't" issues quite a bit. Once they reset their preferences, everything is back to normal. Frustrating! 🤣

If you can attach an example Inkscape SVG file to a reply, we can more easily try to resolve the issue.

Interesting.
