Beyond the Basics Overflow text from one shape to another

I've searched everywhere I can think of and, as far as I can tell, the feature I want doesn't exist. Please tell me if it does. If not, I'd be interested to read thoughts about requesting it as a feature.

Right now it's easy to flow text into a shape. It's a great feature. What would be even cooler would be if you could designate another shape into which overflow text from the first shape flows into the second. So basically, you could have two shapes, text fills up one object, then flows into the next.

If it sounds like I want to use Inkscape as a publisher it's because I do. I've been using Scribus for a year, and while it's an impressive work, it just doesn't offer the graphics capabilities of Inkscape. I think I could do my work much more easily in Inkscape if this one feature were implemented.

Inkscape currently doesn't allow for this. But it's possible it could be added.

But it would be a lot of work to organise though if you're interested.

I'm sorry to revive an old thread, but Inkscape seems to support this for a while.

Select all the shapes where you want the text to flow into, shift+click them in the order that you want. Also select the text and pres 'Flow into Frame' (Alt + W).

If you want to add a frame later on you have to select all frames in order again, if that is too much work you can also add a new object in the XML editor: Select the text, look in 'style' for 'shape-inside' and add the extra frame as 'url(#id)'.

If you use another way to select multiple shapes the flow order can be unexpected, or it doesn't work at all.

I learned about the possibility from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXcFV3P1yxc.

Hey piers, Just wanted to say thank you so much!!!

I never comment on forums but this was such an incredible find, it really makes me want to pursue Inkscape more. I am happily going to use the xml feature and look to supporting Inkscape. This gives me the optimisim that we can create better things together!

More should know of this! I wonder if a new video or resource is in order
