Beginners' Questions Unable to add text
  1. #1
    redjustred redjustred @redjustred

I installed (and reinstalled 3 times) yesterday for Windows 10 64bit

Totally new to inkscape but have used similar programmes. When I try to add text it doesn't matter what letter I type the font changes to a massive size, my curser moves to Mars or somewhere similar and no text appears

My assumption is its a glitch hence the reinstalls but it happens every time.

A few lovely people on FB have tried helping but I'm getting nowhere

This is literally happening from install.

I seem to be able to draw etc

    Any ideas?ย

Yes, click the text tool icon on the left as normal.ย

Before you click on the canvas

Set the text size as shown in the attached image.

There is also a tool built into Windows 10, called 'the snipping tool' it lets you take all kinds of screenshots. You can drag a selection rectangle for just small parts of the screen etc.

Having said that, it was nice to see your happy dog in the photo :)

    Hiย
    Thanks for the reply
Even when I set the font to say 22 before clicking on the canvas it reverts to this ridiculously large font and sends my curser off into crazy land the second I type a letter.ย
Thanks for the info on the snipping tool - it would help as my photo was really really hard to see.
As I say whatever the font is set to not a single letter types.ย
I did a little video but can't upload it as it is obviously too big

It looks like your font size is set to over 8 million pts, so I can see why you're having issues!!

Try opening the Text & Font panel (you can access it via menu Text > Text and Font... On the panel, under the Font tab, there's an option to set the font size there. Try setting it to something more reasonable, like 22pt. Click apply, then click 'Set as Default'. Try that and see if Inkscape 'remembers' the settings after you close and re-open the program.

The other thing to take a look at is the text tool's default settings. Go into menu Edit > Preferences, then click on Tools on the left and select Text. Look near the bottom for the section 'Style of new objects'. Is it set to 'Last used style'? If so, try selecting the other option 'This tool's own style'. The first choice will carry sizes, fonts and colours last used into new documents. The second option sets default Text styles for all documents. Try playing about with these and see if you can get things reset to a normal usable size. You may need to go into the Text and Font panel to set the default again.

The final option is to reset your Preferences file. This resets everything to what the defaults are with a brand new installation (re-installing Inkscape doesn't necessarily wipe user preferences - they are usually carried over between installations). You can reset via Edit > Preferences, then select System. There's a button there to reset. Close and restart Inkscape and a new Preferences file will be created.

    Hi z3z

Thanks for replying. That all sounds logical. I'll have a go at that tomorrow when I can bear to look at it again then I'll report back. Thanks so much for taking the time to try and help.ย

I went all in and did all of those things - no change. I may have a little cry lol

Now this is odd - I imported an svg file of images and tried the text tool on that page now it had the svg on it - it worked fine.
So it just seems that it has a problem when I have a blank/new page - that is definitley kooky
So my work around has been to delete everything from that page that had the svg and safe that now clean pageย as a 'blank page'
All very odd but at least I can do something until I work out what on earth is going on.

You can create a template file with basic settings that you like to use for all files. For example, I like to turn off the page border, so that is set in my template file to save me having go into Document Properties every time to manually turn it off.

Create a blank document that has everything you'd like set as default, then click menu File > Save Template.
