I seem to be experiencing a bug which makes the ruler tool display the wrong unit of measurement. Attached, a line I need to be 9.5 inches which displays as such at the top, but not the ruler. It doesn't seem to make any difference what I set the units to in Document Properties. I've tried reinstalling/updating Inkscape already. As someone who's not very tech savvy I have no idea how to fix this but I really need to. Could anyone help? Thanks so much.
I've found the hover mode of the measurement tool to be wholly unreliable. I wrote a bit about it in part 104 of my tutorial series: http://www.peppertop.com/blog/?p=1563
The older click-drag method of using the tool seems to be a more reliable option.

(The measurement tool is more generally covered in part 61 of my series, with the other additions in Inkscape 1.0 being detailed in part 105)
With the measurement tool selected just click and drag to draw out a line which displays the length and its angle from the horizontal. Turn on suitable snapping to make it easier to target the ends of the line (or whatever other points you want to measure from).
There are various options that affect what exactly is displayed, especially for more complex shapes. See my articles for all the details.

In first place I got the same weird number - after altering the stroke width it's correct. All other measurement tools are correct in first place:

@PixelPest Just tried this, but it didn't seem to fix itself for me.
@Xav How do I use the older method exactly?
Why not use LPE "measure Segments" or howΒ it's called - as it is interactive?
