Can you create custom patterns for the fill? How do I  go about it?  Thanks.  C

In a nutshell, create your pattern, then go to menu Object > Pattern > Object to Pattern. You can then apply it via the Fill & Stroke panel. It'll be listed in the Pattern Fill dropdown box.
