Recently I tried to edit text in .ai file with Inkscape on KDE Neon (Ubuntu based distro) and failed because it is opened as curves. Then I tried to do that on MacOS and it worked. Then I tried to convert the file to .pdf and open it in Inkscape on KDE Neon and result was same as before - text appears as curves. On MacOS Inkscape just works and did opened file with text as text.
On KDE Neon I tried versions from Ubuntu PPA (it crashes with segfault if I try to open something other than .svg) and fresh flatpack from inkscape.org. Settings, of course, was same on bouth machines.
I prefer to work on my linux computer (also inkscape on MacOS looks ugly) and wonder what can I do to make inkscape open .ai files on my linux same way it does on mac?
PS: Forgot to mention that I tried to open the .ai file with Inkscape in Linux Mint and got same result as in KDE Neon - text as curves.
Just in case... have you tried changing the settings on the pdf import menu? If you have the Poppler/ Cairo import, it automatically chages text to paths. I always use the second one, Internal import.
I'm not sure how many of us would be able to test (having both a Mac system and a Linux system). But you're welcome to share some test files, if you like.
Sorry for long silence. A also asked about this issue in KDE Neon telegram group and Rick Mills suggested to look at this ussue. Turns out this was it. I downgraded libpoppler-glib8 to this version and everything is working now. Thank you, Kristie and brynn for your help.

Hi there,
Just in case... have you tried changing the settings on the pdf import menu?
If you have the Poppler/ Cairo import, it automatically chages text to paths.
I always use the second one, Internal import.
No, I did not. I only tried "Internal import" on both systems. I can try to check "Poppler/Cairo import" if you want me to.
Hello,
Well internal import is the right choice.
Under Linux Mint 18 KDE I do not have this problem.

Or if you feel fairly confident that this might be a bug (as opposed to a local problem or only certain files are affected), here's how to report a bug: https://inkscape.org/forums/beyond/how-to-report-bugs-or-request-new-features/

Wow, that was some detective work! Well done!
