I am using Inkscape 1.4 on MacOS. The align menu no longer allows for alignin gan object next toi another (previously the yellow icon next to a white one). Has that been moved or is ot missing?
In Inkscape 1.4 on macOS, the option to align an object next to another (yellow icon next to white) isn’t gone—it’s updated. Open the Align and Distribute dialog (Shift+Ctrl+A), select both objects, set "Relative to" as "Last selected" or "First selected," then use the "Align right edge of first to left edge of second" button. The icon’s design changed, but the function lives in the dialog’s new layout.
I realised that the icon theme "highcolor" was just incorrect. It had duplicate icons for the same funtionality. After I switched my icon theme to "multicolor" it show the correct icons:
The "highcolor" icons are are not identical but they are too similar. If you zoom in to your screenshot you'll see a tiny fuzzy green block to the left of the alignment line. Maybe the difference is clear on a higher resolution display. My eyesight isn't good enough to differentiate them on a 1280x800 laptop screen.

Not sure which icon you´re referring to:
The image above is from the documentation how it shoudl be. but mine looks like this (no "align next to" icon) :

My screenshot is from macOS and as you can see the icon is different but there. Can you test another theme perhaps?
