No need to worry about the small lines... I'd use the shape builder tool.

Just for my curiosity is there a way to break the letter into a bunch of smaller lines like the one in this screen shot?
Yes, you can break paths at selected nodes, then break those subpaths into separate objects.

Thank you that worked. One more question. What version of Inkscape are you running? I like the way your screen looks compared to mine (screen shot attached.)
I'm running 1.3.2. To make your version look like mine, use View>Widescreen (untick the checkbox), then Edit>Preferences>Interface>Theming, Miniwata-Inkscape, hicolor icons (non-symbolic).
