I am a new user of inscape. I am trying to draw two lines with the pen tool that cross each other like an X. I would like to divide them into 4 segments where they intersect. When I try the "Path --> Difference" tool they disappear. Same thing with the "Path --> Division" tool. =(
Polygon is right. It's quicker to use snapping and duplicates.
You could achieve the same result with path > cut path (one of the rare operation of the menu that works with strokes), but you need to remember that the upper (the cutting) path will be discarded after path>cut path. So, you also need to duplicate both paths and then carefully choose wich one will cut the other : a good way to become mad.
Personnally, with Polygon's method, I would disable any snapping option but nodes > cusp nodes and nodes > path intersections
Thank you so much guys ! Cut path is the closest to what I need this for at the moment, but both methods have their merit. I wish Path> Cut Path had an option to cut and keep both lines so that I could pick what I want to get rid of.
Yep, you just need to carefully choose the paths. Here I renamed the paths, duplicated them and then you need to remember that the cutting path is above and will disappear once it has cut the other path. To avoid doing twice the same thing, I did a somehow cross selection : one selection with pink to cut the blue : it leaves two halves of blue path, then the two others : the copy of the blue is atop and will cut the original of the pink.
It is not mandatory to rename and I found that doing this operation with node tool helps to now who is who.
Well. I just wanted to point out that it will not work on the initial 2 paths set up in first place which makes it really combersome. I believe we had an approach in former Inkscape versions via Pah->Division with an helper object. Will check my notes later if I can find it again.
Hello and thanks for taking a look at my post.

Most of booleans operations, like difference or divison work on areas.
No Boolean OP will do and the quickest way in this case with straight lines seems this to me imho:
Polygon is right. It's quicker to use snapping and duplicates.

@David248 have you tried Path->Cut path on this?

Thanks again !
