Creating New Extensions Set up Measurements window/tool

Hello! I use inkscape to make flat patterns for sewing garments.

I have experience in optitex 11 (a CAD program for the same purpose) and the only thing I really miss about the way we used optitex is that you could set up a table of measurements by picking two points on a path and telling the program to auto measure the distance between them (straight line between them, not along the path) and display these measurements in a table in a separate window.  So for example, I could give it a series of points across my various pieces (garment front, side, and back pieces), pull up the window, and instantly see what the chest measurement is that I've set up without having to manually measure across my pieces every time I need to check that number.  And when you move one of those points, it auto updates.

I don't know anything about writing extensions but I absolutely would fund somebody making this a reality for me!

Maybe the Measure Segments path effect could be a stopgap solution for you? Despite its name it only measures the distance between nodes, it doesn't measure the segment if it is curved.
