Beginners' Questions Tracing bitmap options

Hi! I had a freelancer working for me who traced images in Inkscape but she no longer accepts new orders and refuses to explain me her technique. All I know is that she worked in inkscape.

So here I am trying to make it myself and I cannot find the right options to apply while tracing the image.

Herewith I attach the example of the original image and what should it look like after tracing. As far as I understand I need to use color quantization? Simple tracing is definitely not enough, I think I tried already all the possible options but whatever I tried I cannot reach such moustache sharpness along with smooth edges.

Any ideas on how was it made is appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Hi Ollique,

I have never seen anyone get that clean of an output on a bitmap trace, starting from an input like the one provided, without doing some significant manual fine-tuning afterwards. She obviously did at least some work by hand to remove the watermark.

She might have used the single-scan bitmap trace, adjusting the settings and seeing what looked good, creating several different layers of differing quality for different areas of the picture. Then she might have used just the best parts of each scan, deleting the fuzzy parts. At the end of this process, she might have gone in manually to clean up details like the mouth and whiskers.

Ironically, your designer was willing to remove a copyright watermark, but not willing to share the method of doing it. ;) Do you know how long it took her to make that? The result is very good. It is impressive work.
