I have a weird problem. I have an object that appears in EVERY new document I start. It is invisible, so I don't know it is there. But it appears when I import an .svg file into my Glowforge.

In Inkscape, I can open the "Object Menu", and it appears there. It is ALWAYS listed as "path999". It shows up when I click on it here in the Object menu. I delete it. If I close Inkscape, reopen it, then create a New Document, it appears again.

If I open up another New Document without closing the 1st one (i.e. "New Document 2", for instance).this phantom invisible object is there. It will be in EVERY New Document I open.

I have uninstalled. I have even resorted to deleting any instance of "Inkscape" in my registry. I have done this multiple times... uninstall and remove all "Inkscape" from my my registry. I even searched my registry for "path999". but it didn't find any instance of that.

When I reinstall Inkscape 1.1... there it is... the phantom. invisible path999.

This phantom object is of a old wooden wagon wheel that I did a long time ago. So it is something that I created months ago, but it is now haunting me by showing up, invisible, in EVERY SINGLE DOCUMENT I CREATE.

I am at my wit's end trying to figure out why it keeps appearing. I have to manually delete it every single time, from every single file I upload to my glowforge. If I delete it while in Inkscape, save the file, then upload to Glowforge...guess what... it is there.

    HELP!!!!

    Windows 10, Inkscape 1.1

    Thanks for the file.

The object is probably a leftover from an Illustrator file.

You can download the file attached to this reply (20in x 12in) and open in Inkscape. Then save as a Template named GF (or whatever) and tick the checkbox "Save as default template".

Chime back and let us know how that fares.

Open the folder %appdata%\inkscape\templates\ in file explorer.
Or search user template in the inkscape preferences dialog to open the same folder using the open button.

You can either delete your user template default.svg in this folder to have Inkscape use its own default.svg instead.
Or edit this file to your liking using a text editor.

    A couple of samples.

To set your page size in inches at scale 96, this is all the code you need.
    <svg width="20in" height="12in" viewBox="0 0 1920 1152"></svg>

To set your page size in inches at scale 72, this is all the code you need.
    <svg width="20in" height="12in" viewBox="0 0 1440 864"></svg>

    YEAH !!!!

That fixed it! I found the default.svg file as described above, deleted it, and that stinkin' object is GONE!

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much.

I am a fairly new Inkscape user, and didn't know about this! Now I do.

I purchased that wagon wheel image and used the "Trace Bitmap" tool to be able to modify it for a project I was working on. It's been stuck there, haunting me, since that day!

I can sleep well tonight, thanks to you guys. 😁
