I am using Extenations-Generate from path-Scatter to arrange shapes evenly on a circle. How do I tell it to add only 4 shapes in the circle and than add 4 other shapes onto the same circle. All evenly distributed. Thank you!

I´d use Live Path-Effect->Rotate copies.

Can´t confirm - used Rotate copies all the time. Which "manual" are you talking about?

The maual I saw it is the one that coems up in Inkscape.

I have another question about the cross mark. Do you know how I can make it stay put after drugged outside a circle? 

Here's another method using the Align and Distribute dialog [shift+ctrl+a] and the Transform dialog [shift+ctrl+m]. Distribute your first four objects around a circle (or ellipse, or arc). Rotate the circle by 45 degrees then repeat with another four objects. Object placement is determined from the selection order.

Under "Align and distribute" I dont have your options at all. All I see is a pull down menu "Selection area" & "Treat selection as group". A bunch of graphs below. 

My Inkscape ver is Inkscape 0.92.4 (5da689c313, 2019-01-14). Is that yours?

My video was captured in the current Inkscape version 1.2.2 which has many new and improved functions compared to 0.92. I recommend that you upgrade.
