so I have watched numerous videos, and have re-watched them following the steps and still I am having nothing but frustration, I will post some images from my screen and possibly some tech, script writter might be able to give a better understand of my errors so I go through the entire process of creating the image, then I save as svg file dxf file but when I hit the save as g-ode file it pops up with a note that I have no idea where to fix or add information
Hi Bill Lawrence, welcome to the forum! Thank you for your message.
For us to help you better please give us some more information about your setting:
What is you operating system (name and version, Windows, macOS, Linux, which version)? What is the version of the Inkscape program you are using (1.0 beta1, alpha, 0.92...)?
The unicorn extension (https://github.com/martymcguire/inkscape-unicorn) has been discontinued by it's original developer back in 2011, it's no longer being used. Your guide ust be very old for it to still be asking you to install this very old extension.
Umm.... That's the first I've heard that. We get a LOT of reports of people using that extension. Although most of them report that it doesn't work. All I've ever been able to do is suggest they contact the author about it. I don't know if any ever did.
Based on the number of reports I've seen people using it, there must be some really popular tutorial about it, somewhere. Or maybe it's just an easy tutorial, and attracts a lot of beginners?? Someone really should take it down, if the extension doesn't work. (This is why I call for official tutorials, by the way.)
This appears to be a modified version of it. Maybe it would work? Although I don't know modified exactly in what way. Or if it's any more current. https://github.com/firebovine/inkscape-spherebot
However, Inkscape has LOTS of extensions that produce gcode. Many of them appear to be made for specific hardware (from what I can tell anyway). So I guess users should research what their machine needs.
thanks to both you Brynn and Martin my engraver uses Grbl and I am still looking for that extension though someone did post a video with exactly the same message and he said he solved it by selecting px rather then mm in document settings thanks again I will continue
I have suceeded in writing my first G-Code inkscape program the issues were of course that (1) entering the correct format (px) both locations, setting text as On Path, and sizing correctly in document preferences thanks everyone, and a special thanks for the videos that helped where I must be able to see to do correctly :)
Interesting! Inkscape changed it's native units from px to mm, a couple of versions ago. And it sounds like that's the only part that doesn't work properly anymore. It sounds like it might not take much, to update that extension to work with current versions of Inkscape.
