In that video the guy selects a palette, then draws a circle. After that he selects this circle and pulls the divider. Next he selects the pencil, set the point outside the circle on the divider and draws the line ending it with the pressing the SpaceBar. Then he chooses the "Divide" menu and selects the half of the circle and just pulls it away.
In my cases everything worked properly until I needed to select the half and pull it away., Whole ellipse was selected and so the whole ellipse was pulling.
What is the problem?
I am running InkScape 1.0.2 (2021-01-15) on Gentoo Linux.
Thank you.
P.S.: I'm trying to create an SVG icon for my SD project.
The line dragged in from the ruler is a guideline. It can be snapped to the midpoint of the circle for a precise semicircle.
The pen tool does not need to be dragged, but rather can be clicked on the guide for the upper node, then double clicked on the guide below the circle for the dividing line.
After using Path>Division, use the esc key or click anywhere on the canvas to de-select the two semicircle halves.
I dropped the guideline in the center of the ellipse, selected the "Pencil" tool, then clicked on the left side of ellipse and then double clicked on the right of it on that line. The big back line appears.
Then I went to Path->Divide, hit ESC and tried to drop the bottom part of the ellipse.
No matter what I do and how I do it, I either move the whole ellipse or start drawing the line.
Is it possible to attach the image here to that post?
Basically I'm looking to create a small cylinder which will be grey inside to represent the hard drive.
So the divided ellipse will represent the top and bottom of the cylinder.
I may even attach the image I'm after as I want the SVG implementation of it...
At 17 seconds I'm copying the width of the oval with the outline. When you remove the outline the oval will become smaller, because half of the outline sits outside of the object it outlines. Then I go up there and paste the width in again so it will have the same size as before. The padlock ensures that the aspect ratio stays the same.
Look at the PNG image - the one in second message. See the grey cylinder in the top right corner? This is what I want and this ellipse in my SVG in the top right corner is made just for that.
If you can tell me how to divide that ellipse in half and make that cylinder-like shape like in the original PNG - it would be great.
Please see attached. At this point when I choose Path->Division, I can't move the bottom portion of the ellipse. I'm always moving the whole ellipse.
> I'm not sure what cylinder you are referring to. Are you talking about the ODBC 32 icon? Don't see any cylinders there. :)
Yes, I'm talking about that PNG icon. And I'm talking about that grey thing that look like a hard drive. It does look like a cylinder. And it is in the top right corner.
> Regarding your division problem; do you select the oval first, hold down shift and select the line, then Path -> Division?
I just did that, Then I hit ESC and tried to move the bottom part. And instead I moved the whole ellipse.
> Also, you have a big outline on that oval too, so it will look strange after the division if you don't remove it.
What exactly I need to do to remove it?
Thank you.
At this point it probably could be good to get to screen sharing.... ;-)
I selected the circle tool and draw an ellipse. Then I selected this ellipse and pressed the SHIFT key and click the big "X" in the bottom left corner of the window.
I then dropped the line from the top to be at the center of the ellipse horizontally. I selected the Bezel tool and click on one side of the ellipse and then double click on the other side.
Then I click on the selection "arrow" tool and clicked on the ellipse. Then chose "Path->Divide".
Trying to move bottom part of the ellipse produces the movement of the whole ellipse.
I think I'm screwing something with the selection somewhere.
I'm going to try to and see the latest clip again and follow up. But I think this what I did is what's on the video.
Hi, ALL,
New user here - please don't shoot me ;-)
I'm trying to create half ellipse.
I found the following YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AYRkWV3Zo8 but it didn't work for me.
In that video the guy selects a palette, then draws a circle. After that he selects this circle and pulls the divider. Drag either half as desired.
@Tyler Durden,
Thank you for the reply.

How do I snap that line in the middle? Can yo give me an exact procedure?
And I'm going to follow your suggestions.
In the snap controls, one option is snap to object centers. http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Snapping.html#Snapping-Objects
@TylerDurden,
I tried to follow you suggestion, but failed.

The Bezier Pen is the tool I would use. The pencil is very different.

To attach an image, the paperclip button below the text area can be used, or the image can be dragged from a file manager into the text area.

Hi,
This is an SVG I'm trying to make.
I hope you can see the image.
Thank you.
And this is is the image I'm after:
I don't need the "32" text - just need the little grey cylinder at the top right corner.
Let me know if you can't see an SVG from the previous post or you can't download it.
Thank you.
P.S.: Will you be able to write a complete instruction on how to make it? I will need another one like this...
Just in case you will not be able to get the inline image...
I hope I understood what you are trying to do. :)

@bleke,
Yes, you did.
However you cut (divided) wrong ellipse. ;-)

I'm not sure what cylinder you are referring to. Are you talking about the ODBC 32 icon? Don't see any cylinders there. :)
Regardig your division problem; do you select the oval first, hold down shift and select the line, then Path -> Division?
Also, you have a big outline on that oval too, so it will look strange after the division if you don't remove it.

Have the object selected, hold down shift and press the "X" colour swatch at the bottom left of the window.

In Inkscape's help menu there are easy tutorials for learning some fundamentals.
For this specific task, the Soup Can exercise in the Manual may be helpful: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/SoupCan.html
Hi,
So I removed what I did and started ober.

Note that at 1:11 in the video, the two portions are de-selected, before the lower portion is dragged.
Objects can be de-selected by using the escape key or by clicking on the empty portion of the canvas.
@bleke,
I had some issues with the machine where the InkScape is.
It fixed now and I can come back to this.
So I am now at the point where I need to remove the corners of the rectangle at the top.
As far as I can understand/see the process is:
1. After the ellipse is moved to the top it is still selected.
2. Select Path -> Stroke to Path
3. Select the rectangle
4. Select Path -> Difference
5. Select Path -> Break Apart
At this point the ellipse should have 2 dotted lines inside.
However there is some mouse movement and I'm not sure what you are doing.
But I can't remove the corners of the rectangle to make the top smooth on the ellipse.
I believe I'm missing something.
Can you help?
TIA!
I think you're missing one thing in step 3: Select both the rectangle and the oval.
I had just gone to bed, so I won't be able to reply for quite a while now. Good luck! :)
Good morning, ;-)
I'm attaching 2 files.
First on is after "Stroke to Path". second - after "Difference"
For some reason the "Difference" menu make the circle line disappear.
What am I missing?
Thank you.
I'm not sure.. could you save your progress and upload the file here?
Hi,
Here they are:
Thank you.
You can't do path operations on a group.
The grey rectangle is grouped with some strange thing far far down on the workspace.
Just ungroup the rectangle and it should work. (ctrl-shift-G)
Hi,
This is my progress (in the attached files).

I don't see any difference between the files. Anyway, just select the rectangle and the oval and choose "Difference" from the Path menu.
