Has this happened to you? You want to move part of a path somewhere else, but the node you want to break at is a node in the middle of the path. Of course, there is an easy workaround: draw distinct paths in the first place. I'm working with straight lines here, so my needs are simple. I haven't considered the implications of Bezier or other curves, or how to deal with closed paths. Your opinion is sought. Would you welcome this feature? Or is this already possible? Thanks for taking the time.

Hi. In Polygon's GIF above, he is showing an in-built feature, accessible by pressing N to get the Node Tool.

Once the Node Tool is chosen, you can select one or more nodes on your Path, to break it apart. And the. Path > Break Apart to a truly break these previously selected nodes.

This is breaking apart Paths, not Objects as you stated. There is a distinction in Inkscape. You can do Path Operations also (boolean opertions).

It depends what you mean when you state "break apart" and if you actually mean a path or an object.
